Crunchbase Startup Health: Timeline Trending Stories Upcoming Events Crunch With Us SIGN UP for CrunchDaily Crunchboard

General Electric built what is today a $219 billion multinational industrial behemoth by continuously investing in innovation, technology and computing. As the maker of airplane engines, trains, power plant turbines and medical equipment, GE’s business generally falls outside the virtual walls of the consumer Web. However, as the New York Times reports, GE has recently renewed its commitment to investing in innovation, particularly as it places its bet on the “industrial Internet” in an effort to bring some digital magic to industry.

According to the NYT, GE has established a new, giant software center in the Bay Area and is already employing 250 engineers, developers and computer scientists with the plans to hire 150 more and invest $1 billion in the center by 2015. Beyond embracing the “Internet of Everything” and smarter industry, G.E. also has its eyes on healthcare and the revolution that’s waiting in the wings.

With digital health data proliferating, wearable health-tracking devices (and the sensors underneath) maturing and becoming cheaper to produce — along with improvements in remote diagnosis, healthcare transparency and a booming app economy, the intersection of health and technology is heating up. As Rock Health’s year-end report shows, in spite of a sluggish IPO market and wary investors, the digital health space grew exponentially in 2012, as health startups “saw 45 percent more investment and were part of 56 percent more deals compared to the year prior, with total capital invested growing from $968 million to $1.4 billion.”

Meanwhile, on the back of its enormous healthcare business, G.E. launched Healthymagination in 2009 as a vehicle to invest in healthtech innovations that aim to deliver higher-quality (and more affordable healthcare), improve access to health info and more. The company committed a whopping $6 billion to the initiative to make this happen.

As part of this, G.E. is now looking to expand its support of health innovation to early-stage companies. This morning G.E. partnered with StartUp Health — the academy, accelerator and resource for healthtech entrepreneurs — to create a three-year program design to help accelerate the growth of consumer health startups. Part of its healthymagination initiative, the program intends to “not just support a great idea,” StartUp Health co-founder Unity Stokes tells us, “but to scale these businesses and develop significant transformative consumer health innovations.”

Focusing primarily on increasing equity value and scaling operations, the program will incubate up to ten companies, which participate in the program for free, in exchange for 2 to 10 percent equity ownership by G.E. and StartUp Health’s Innovation fund. While it does not offer a guarantee of any capital investment in the companies, the program will have a “significant focus” on customer development and ensuring that its startups have access to investors, VCs, strategic partners and other investment channels.

Although the companies are still solidifying the model, the plan is for each startup to be partnered with a G.E. executive that matches their business model and service offering. The mentor/partner, along with StartUp Health, will help them connect and partner with other experts and resources within G.E., be they tech experts, healthcare experts, product gurus, and so on.

The goal is to leverage the entire G.E. infrastructure to build and scale transformative consumer health innovations and to take a tailored and customized approach to accelerating startup growth. The program will be open to any consumer health businesses — and StartUp Health companies can apply as well — with a focus on companies concentrating on improving quality of care and more affordable healthcare for consumers.

To add that Silicon Valley, startuppy stamp to the program, G.E. also announced today that long-time Kleiner Perkins Partner Risa Stack, PhD, has been appointed General Manager of the company’s Emerging Health Innovations. She will report to healthymagination CEO Sue Siegel. The move makes a lot of sense considering that Stack has served on the advisory board for healthymagination for the last two years and spent her nine years at Kleiner in the firm’s life sciences group, where she focused on precision medicine, platform technologies and therapeutics. And, as Xconomy points out, this makes Stack the third Silicon Valley VC to join healthymagination in recent months.

G.E. and StartUp Health’s new program follows on the heels of a similar partnership between Nike and TechStars. The apparel giant and the national startup accelerator teamed up to create the Nike+ Accelerator program in December, designed to cultivate entrepreneurial talent to help scale (and improve) Nike’s growing mobile health ecosystem, leveraging its increasingly popular mobile health and fitness products like FuelBand and Nike+ Running.

When multinational giants like Nike and G.E. begin throwing their weight behind early-stage health companies, jumping on the Accelerator Bandwagon, it’s a clear indication of the enormous potential for the digital health space. And G.E. seems committed to creating an accelerator that produces real, innovative businesses and products — not just an Instagram for Patients.

As to the program, applications are being accepted beginning today (January 8th), which can be found here, and companies have 30 days to apply (deadline is February 8th), with selections taking place in March before the program kicks off in April.

The CES showroom floor is full of surprises, but none were quite as exciting as the plethora of celebrities we bumped into on Day 1. Much of that is in great thanks to Monster, who is focused on new partnerships with brands and celebrities alike, including Diesel Jeans, Nick Cannon, and Xzibit.

With a little luck and the help of some nice PR folks, we managed to get video interviews with male supermodel Tyson Beckford, Joseph “Run” Simmons of Run-DMC, Sugar Ray Leonard, Nick Cannon (formerly of Nickelodeon and current Mariah Carey spouse), and Xzibit.

Screen Shot 2013-01-08 at 4.37.10 PM

Every single one of them is pimping headphones, which makes sense considering that these artists and celebrities specialize in both music and fashion.

It’s become clear recently that headphones are more than just a tool to listen to music with on the go. The celebs we spoke with obviously understand this, and they also happen to be pretty down to earth, too.

Here are the video interviews for each. Enjoy!

Livio is going free — at least for developers. The Michigan-based startup just launched a freemium pricing structure for Livio Connect, its app development platform aimed at safety bringing apps into cars.

As we talked about in the video above, this move is aimed at bringing more apps to its growing library of apps.

And why not? A smartphone is often the center of person’s life and that doesn’t change when they enter a vehicle. Apps are still used, and Livio wants to make them safer to use while driving

The Livio also announced at CES 2013 several new partners for including Accuweather, Inrix, and Parkopedia. These join their existing network consisting of 977music.com, AddictedToRadio, Digitally Imported, Greater Media, Inc., Grooveshark, JazzRadio, Live365, NPR, Rdio, RockRadio, SkyFM and TuneIn.

IGN's Most Anticipated Comics of 2013

The start of a new year is always a strange time for comics, particularly since we so often have little idea about what to expect. For example, this time last year, who expected we’d be ¾ of our way through a Watchmen prequel series and that Marvel would be in the midst of their biggest publishing initiative in years at the start of 2013?

But there are some things we know for certain this year: crossover events are coming back in a big way for both major superhero publishers, and there is no shortage of exciting new series, both creator and company-owned, all across the board.

In alphabetical order, here are our most anticipated comic books for the year – be sure to sound off with your own in the comments.

Age of Ultron

Writer: Brian Michael Bendis | Artist: Bryan Hitch, Carlos Pacheco, Brandon Peterson | Publisher: Marvel | Release: June 2013

Sure, Avengers vs. X-Men wasn’t exactly a thrill ride. It had some cool moments and some great fallout (pretty much all of Marvel NOW!), but ultimately the event itself was long and dull. However, we’re hopeful that 2013’s Marvel event – The Age of Ultron – can erase those memories and make us excited for event comics once again.

This one has been seeded for a very long time throughout Brian Bendis’ Marvel work, and it’s all finally coming to a head. When Ultron wins the battle against humanity, which of Marvel’s finest will be left standing to fight the last fight?

The Origins of the Age of Ultron

Green Arrow

Writer: Jeff Lemire | Artist: Andrea SorrentinoPublisher: DC | Release: February 2013

Oliver Queen has struggled to connect with readers since the New 52 relaunch in 2011, but it looks like this year might finally be a banner year for the Emerald Archer. With writer Jeff Lemire (Animal Man, Justice League Dark) and artist Andrea Sorrentino (I, Vampire) taking a crime/noir approach to Green Arrow riddled with dark mysteries of his past and all-new villains, we’re confident that Ollie will finally find his place in the current DC Universe.

Now that Green Arrow’s got his own hit ab-riddled TV show, it’s about time that he became a power player in the greater DCU.

Hand-Drying in America: And Other Stories

Writer: Ben Katchor | Artist: Ben Katchor | Publisher: Pantheon | Release: February 2013

Ben Katchor’s new graphic novel is a collection of stories that explores at the most mundane objects of 21st century living in a bizarre new light – from architecture to household commodities to materialistic items of our affection – in an effort to challenge the way we look at the world we live in.

Katchor’s patented surrealistic illustration along with his clever -- and frequently twisted – outlook on society will surely result in one of our most beloved comics offerings of 2013.

Lost Cat

Writer: Jason | Artist: Jason | Publisher: Fantagraphics | Release: June 2013

The release of a new book from Norwegian cartoonist Jason is usually the highlight of the year, and we’re not expecting the debut of Lost Cat to be any different. Jason’s unique style is economic but full of depth, using his definitive anthropomorphic characters to present us with the most human of emotions through extreme situations.

Lost Cat follows a detective that returns the titular feline to its owner, only to discover he’s got a profound connection with said owner. When she goes missing, the detective moves on with his life physically, but mentally he continues their relationship as Jason explores what happens when you lose the person you feel most connected to.

Pretty Deadly

Writer: Kelly Sue DeConnick | Artist: Emma Rios | Publisher: Image | Release: 2013

We honestly don’t know all that much about Pretty Deadly at this point, other than it’s a western tale by Kelly Sue DeConnick and Emma Rios, published by Image Comics. And really, that’s all we need to know. DeConnick had a breakout year in 2012, so hopefully her newfound readership from fantastic Marvel titles like Captain Marvel and Avengers Assemble will follow her over to the creator-owned realm. Couple that with the always lovely work of Emma Rios, and that’s a recipe for sure-fire awesomesauce.

Plus, you know, comics could always use some more westerns.

Sandman

Writer: Neil Gaiman | Artist: J.H. Williams III | Publisher: Vertigo | Release: November 2013

Quite possibly the most acclaimed piece of comic book storytelling this side of Watchmen, Neil Gaiman’s Sandman is returning in 2013 with a brand new prequel mini-series. Joined by the wonderful J.H. Williams III on art duties, Gaiman is returning to his Endless saga to show the events that led to the capture of Morpheus way, way back in Sandman #1.

The announcement of the series was the standout moment for comics at San Diego Comic-Con 2012, and though we won’t be seeing it debut until much later this year, don’t expect the hype for this book to disappear.

Star Wars

Writer: Brian Wood | Artist: Carlos D'Anda | Publisher: Dark Horse | Release: January 2013

Though the future of Star Wars comics appears to be in flux thanks to Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm – they’ll likely wind up being put out through Marvel once Dark Horse’s licensing deal expires – 2013 is still chock full of exciting new comics set in Dark Horse’s galaxy far, far away. Simply titled Star Wars, Brian Wood and Carlos D’Anda’s new series forgets all the sequels and prequels that came after A New Hope and instead returns us to that magical moment in 1977, when anything was possible.

We didn’t know the Skywalker legacy. Han wasn’t in carbonite. The Clone Wars were just a throwaway mention in a line of dialogue. The Rebels were riding high from victory. It was a period of immeasurable possibility, and that’s what this series aims to explore – a Star Wars you haven’t seen since 1977.

Untitled Superman by Scott Snyder and Jim Lee

Writer: Scott Snyder | Artist: Jim Lee | Publisher: DC | Release: Summer 2013

Much like Green Arrow, Superman has struggled to connect with readers of the New 52. Based on a chat we had with Scott Snyder a few weeks ago about his new Super-book with artist Jim Lee, that’s about to change. With the Man of Steel movie on the horizon, now is the time to return Superman to his role as the preeminent superhero. We can think of few better ways to do that than by giving the character to one of modern comics’ most celebrated writers, who has demonstrated an affection and understanding of DC’s characters that clicks with the fans. Not to mention pairing him with one of the most high profile comic book artists of the last twenty years.

We think it’s safe to say that the Man of Steel is in good hands in 2013.

Trillium

Writer: Jeff Lemire | Artist: Jeff Lemire | Publisher: Vertigo | Release: 2013

The last love story ever told, you say? Written and drawn by Jeff Lemire, you say? Our money: take it. With Sweet Tooth at an end, Lemire unveiled his new Vertigo project at New York Comic-Con this year, which he called his “most ambitious and most challenging.” Coming from a guy that’s given us comics like Essex County, Sweet Tooth, and our pick for Best Original Graphic Novel of 2012, The Underwater Welder, that’s saying a lot.

Trillium is a sci-fi series with a powerful human story at its center, and you can bet we’ll be waiting anxiously for the first issue to debut.

Trinity War

Writer: Geoff Johns | Artist: Unknown | Publisher: DC | Release: 2013

Whereas Marvel has had event fever these last couple of years, since relaunching the DC Universe at the end of Flashpoint, DC hasn’t had an outright universe-spanning crossover event. That all changes with Trinity War, which was teased with last year’s Free Comic Book Day offering, which we picked apart and analyzed as much as we possibly could.

With two Justice League teams coming to the forefront in 2013 and the very mysterious Trinity of Sin making sporadic and ominous appearances throughout this last year and a half, it appears that things that have been brewing since September 2011 will finally reach its boiling point this year.

The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys

Writer: Gerard Way & Shaun Simon | Artist: Becky Cloonan | Publisher: Dark Horse | Release: June 2013

It’s been a while since we’ve seen any comic book work from Gerard Way, the writer of the utterly fabulous Umbrella Academy. Though more Umbrella Academy isn’t in the cards at the moment, his new project – The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys – takes its name from Way’s band’s most recent record, My Chemical Romance’s Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, a concept album about a post-apocalyptic future. This book is the continuation of that story, starring the lone surviving member of the original Killjoys who must continue the good fight against the evil corporation known as Better Living Industries.

But don’t worry, fandom of My Chemical Romance or experience with the Danger Days album isn’t required; Way’s quirky writing style (along with co-writer Shaun Simon) will surely deliver some mighty fine characters, and the inclusion of Becky Cloonan on art duties is simply icing on the cake.

The Wake

Writer: Scott Snyder | Artist: Sean MurphyPublisher: Vertigo | Release: 2013

With Scott Snyder’s American Vampire going on hiatus for most of 2013 and Sean Murphy’s Punk Rock Jesus (IGN’s Best Mini-Series of 2012) having wrapped up, it’s time for the two creators to pair up once again – they previously collaborated on American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest – for something entirely new. The Wake is an underwater horror tales, in which a deep sea discovery leads to a change in the way that we live our lives on land.

A new mini-series from two of our favorite creators in comics? This one is a no-brainer.

The Wolverine Director on the Film's Chronology

In a recent interview, director James Mangold explained his process for approaching his latest film The Wolverine, which centers on Logan (Hugh Jackman) in Japan and his complicated past, present and future. Of course, what's really interesting is that -- unlike Wolverine's previous solo film -- Mangold's story takes place after the events of X-Men: The Last Stand. But just how tied is The Wolverine to the X-Men films?

"It's set after X-Men 3, but I wouldn't call it a sequel to X-Men 3," Mangold told Entertainment Weekly. "You have a choice the second you enter a world like this with a huge amount of comic books, backstories, three movies, a Wolverine origins movie... You have decide where you're going to exist in relation to all these other things, particularly if you're working with an actor who actually played the character in other films."

Mangold went on to add that Chris Claremont and Frank Miller's 1982 Wolverine saga -- upon which the film is based -- played a big part in deciding where the film would take place.

"I felt it was really important to find Logan at a moment where he was stripped clean of his duties to the X-Men, his other allegiances, and even stripped clean of his own sense of purpose," he said. "I was fascinated with the idea of portraying Logan as a ronin -- the definition of which is a samurai without a master, without a purpose. Kind of a soldier who is cut loose. War is over. What does he do? What does he face? What does he believe anymore? Who are his friends? What is his reason for being here anymore? I think those questions are especially interesting when you're dealing with a character who is essentially immortal."

"It was only to my advantage to set it after the X-Men films because the X-Men had effectively ended at that point. A lot of the key characters had died," Mangold continue. "There was a sense if I’m locating this film not five minutes after the other movie, but a period of time after that last X-Men movie, I can find a Logan who is living separate from the world. He is no longer a member of some superhero team."

For the full interview with Mangold, head over to EW.com.

The Wolverine opens July 26.

CES 2013: Timeline Trending Stories Upcoming Events Crunch With Us SIGN UP for CrunchDaily Crunchboard

Matt Rogers is the Founder and VP of Engineering at Nest and brought his latest thermostat – a steel-clad beauty with improved design and sensor placement – to our stage at CES 2013.

This year at Nest has been full of changes. The company launched a new version in October and improved the iPad/iPhone app. They also began sending emails to users describing energy usage in their area and detailing how much they’ve saved during the period.

Rogers told us about their recent outage, explaining that their activation servers went down because they had sold so many units. It was, he said, the only thermostat that people wanted to leave under the tree for the holidays which, I believe, is a first in the realm home electronics mostly associated with Home Depot.

He also talked about the market for the thermostats, explaining that 10 million are sold every year in the US and Canada. He expects to see updates to the device and software and, most interestingly, plans to expand out of the country.

New DDR game aimed at fighting obesity

Konami teams with UnitedHealthcare for DDR Classroom Edition that allows teachers to track students' health progress.

Konami and UnitedHealthcare today announced a joint initiative aimed at reducing childhood obesity through a new version of DanceDanceRevolution called the Classroom Edition.

The game and its associated hardware was developed by Performance Designed Products and allows up to 48 students to simultaneously participate in a dance session by using mat controllers. These mats are outfitted with a "smart card reader" that tracks an individual student's progress.

Teachers will receive information about students' health including number of steps taken during a particular song, body mass index, and caloric burn rate. A song list for the DDR Classroom Edition was not announced, and a Konami representative was not immediately available to comment.

DDR Classroom Edition has been launched in three schools already, including those in Longwood, Florida; Gainesville, Georgia; and Fresno, Texas. The game will also be folded into the "Activate for Kids" school wellness program, which is run by UnitedHealthcare and the United Health Foundation throughout Florida, Georgia, and Texas.

Crunchbase triggit: Timeline Trending Stories Upcoming Events Crunch With Us SIGN UP for CrunchDaily Crunchboard

“Do we want to bet the company on this?”, CEO Zach Coelius asked his advertising tech startup Triggit when it got a shot to work with Facebook’s ad exchange. It took the chance, raised $7.4 million, and now FBX is performing 36% better than Google’s ad exchange, according to data Triggit released today showing it may have hit the jackpot. Triggit’s revenue is up 300% since it jacked into FBX.

For those less familiar, FBX is Facebook’s cookie-based retargeted ad system that launched in June 2011. It lets advertisers drop cookies on people who visit their site, say to look at a pair of shoes they might buy, then target them with ads on Facebook promoting those same shoes to get them to go through with the purchase.

Retargeted ad exchanges like Google’s AdX have been around for awhile, and many advertisers have big retargeted ad budgets that Facebook wants to tap into. Some think FBX could become one of Facebook’s core revenue streams because retargeting lets it reach users who’ve shown purchase intent even better than search.

facebook-exchange-and-search

Advertising technology companies called demand side platforms work with advertisers and help them buy huge retargeted ad ampaigns. They collect cookies from advertisers so when one of their site visitors goes to publisher sites like Facebook, the DSP makes a real-time bid to show them a retargeted ad.

Triggit was in business for seven years working with Google, Rubicon, Admeld and other retargeting exchanges before FBX launched. It was nearing profitability thanks to scalable technology that let it buy billions of ads a month, and innovative features like the ability to scan an advertiser’s website and automatically turn into ad headlines and images.

When Coelius got the offer to be one of the first DSPs with access to FBX, he knew Triggit could leverage its technology to take advantage of the opportunity, but it had to work fast to get a head start. So despite the risk that users might hate retargeted ads on Facebook, Coelius tells me Triggit put “100% of its focus” on FBX. To accelerate development for FBX, in November Triggit raised a $7.4 million Series B led by Spark Capital and Foundry Group.

Triggit’s bet is panning out. By the end of November it had seen its revenue increase 300% in the five short months since it started working with FBX. And today it released a new set of stats indicating just how well Facebook Exchange is performing for advertisers. The data is even more convincing than a few stats from several DSPs that we published about early FBX trials in September. AdRoll saw 16X return on investment; TellApart saw a 6.65% click through rate compared to 6.41% on Google’s AdX; and Triggit got 4X higher profit, 2.2X higher post-click conversion rates, and 6.5X lower cost per click-through order than on other ad exchanges.

New Data Shows FBX Is A Winner

Based on six weeks of data about 76 million ad viewers, Triggit found that people are 240% more likely to a return to an advertiser’s site after they’re retargeted with ads for that site on Facebook. 60% of the time, people saw a retargeted ad on Facebook for a site they’d visited less than an hour ago thanks to incredible time-on-site and return visit frequency Facebook gets.

FBX ads are performing much better than standard, static Facebook sidebar ads. Retargeted ads with dynamic creative that relate to what a user browsed on an advertiser’s website got 43% high click through rates, delivered conversions for 1/3 of the price, and converted users 30% faster than static ads, according to two campaigns Triggit ran for a major online retailer.

Most interesting, though, is how Facebook Exchange stacks up against Google’s ad exchange and others. Triggit ran a campaign with half the ads purchased through Facebook Exchange and half on other exchanges including Google’s AdX, Rubicon, OpenX, and Pubmatic. Users who saw Facebook Exchange ads were 36% more likely to convert (for example, make a purchase) than users seeing the campaign on the established ad exchanges.

Dynamic FBX Ads Vs Static FB Ads

If FBX continues to perform better than competitors, it could suck up significant amounts of advertising spend, and turn into a huge money-maker for Facebook. In the meantime, it seems Triggit anchored itself to the right boat. It earns revenue on each ad it runs for its clients.

Coelius tells me the goal is to use retargeting to make ads actually relevant, and change the way the world perceives them. He says “Facebook has the power and the potential to make ads stop being bad and start being good, and make the people who are unhappy with advertising realize its not interruptive.” Instead, if FBX can show products people actually want to buy, ads can even be useful.

Advertising has gotten a bad wrap, but its actually the lifeblood of the consumer Internet. It lets everything from important communication utilities like Facebook to fun games become viable businesses. Coelius concludes that “If Triggit can get to where we can bankroll the Internet and make people happy. That’d be awesome.”

Check out my interview with Triggit CEO Zach Coelius below, and watch as we discuss how FBX could make an even bigger impact if Facebook opens it up for mobile advertising.

Following a report by Digitimes this morning citing industry sources, The Wall St. Journal is today confirming that it, too, hears that Apple is working on a low-cost version of the iPhone, which could launch as early as this year.

The phone could be made cheaper by using less expensive parts, the WSJ says. For example, it could use a different shell made of polycarbonate plastic, or parts recycled from older iPhone models. This isn’t the first time the WSJ has reported that Apple was exploring such a device – in 2011, it issued a similar report, again citing the ever-present “people familiar with the matter” as sources.

Such a device would be ideal in targeting developing markets, including China, where the iPhone’s high price is concern. According to the WSJ report, Apple has been developing this cheaper iPhone for years, but could not decide how to move forward with the device.

If the report of the newer, cheaper iPhone is true, such a launch would position Apple to better compete with Android smartphones in emerging regions, where the move to smartphones is still a battle to be won. Android currently has the advantage, thanks to the variety of devices that can run the Android operating system, including those which come closer to matching the price point of the “feature phones” that users in these areas are upgrading from.

As mobile analytics provider Flurry noted a year ago, the largest addressable markets for mobile apps in 2012 included India, China, Japan, among others. China in particular saw quick gains in 2012, with the country having climbed into the number two spot in terms of new iOS and Android activations as of March. China is now Apple’s second-largest market, but iPhone sales are losing traction to competition from Samsung and Nokia, plus domestic handset makers like Huawei, ZTE and Lenovo.

That being said, sales of the iPhone 5′s launch in China were reportedly strong, despite reports about the lack of lineups for the device. Apple later said it sold over 2 million units the first weekend.

In Digitimes report today, the low-cost iPhone would have a larger screen than the iPhone 5, which doesn’t sound right – that would be costly. Digitimes, however, is more hit-or-miss in terms of its reporting. The WSJ, on the other hand, gives the rumor more credence.

Analysts have also said they believed Apple would have to launch such a device in order to compete in order to reach the millions of users who couldn’t afford the current iPhone.

Kevin Bacon, James Purefoy and Kevin Williamson on Violence, Love and The Following

The Following is set to premiere on Monday, January 21 at 9/8c on FOX, and creator Kevin Williamson was on hand with stars Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy (Rome) at today's TCA (Television Critics Association) tour to talk about creating the latest fictionalized serial killer, real-world and televised violence and finding a core of love in the midst of brutality and gore.

With the show, creator Williamson enters the world of adult-themed horror. Having penned Scream (and two of its sequels) and developed and executive produced The Vampire Diaries for The CW, Williamson was ready to move into a more mature exploration of the tropes of the genre.

The creator had the initial idea for The Following when he was researching the Gainesville murders while writing Scream. He has said that he thought, "wouldn't it be terrifying if rather than a drifter, this was a charming professor who was killing these women."

The series stars Bacon as Ryan Hardy, a former FBI agent who is damaged and haunted by the last case he worked. Enter Joe Carroll (Purefoy), a charismatic literature professor turned serial killer that Hardy brought to justice in 2004.

When Carroll escapes eight-years later, Hardy is called in to consult. It becomes clear that while in jail Hardy has been able to amass a following of lost souls, would-be killers and sociopaths to do his long distance bidding.

Carroll, a failed suspense writer who is obsessed with the work of Edgar Allan Poe, explored Poe’s thesis that "there is nothing so fascinating in the world as a beautiful woman dying" by slaughtering 14 co-eds at the university where he taught.

He now intends to create a living work of art by “casting” former agent Hardy as the reluctant hero in a story of his own design. The “story” will include a widespread outbreak of slaughter, with legions of murderers all looking to Carroll for their marching orders.

Williamson combines several of his lifelong fascinations in the series, including a very early introduction to Poe's work, and an interest in the creation and psychology of cults.

"My mom took me to a Richmond Poe museum," Williamson recalled. "And the walls were red and looked like blood, and they had The Raven written on the wall, and you had to follow around to read it. I remember it being most magical day. When I went home my mom had bought me the collective works of Poe and I became fascinated with him, he was a very damaged writer."

A very damaged writer is, of course, at the center of The Following. The Carroll character exists more as a puppet master in this world, though. By the time we meet him, his killing days are nearly done.

"Carroll is this magnetic character, he can pinpoint what's missing in your life and he can fill it," Williamson said. "And if you can find someone who can warm you, and fill that missing place in your life, you might be willing to follow them to some really dark places."

"These are people that don’t need the slightest bit of convincing to do the things they do," Purefoy said, dispelling the notion that cult leaders are somehow able to transform otherwise rational people into mindless killing automatons. "They join with him because he offers them a non-judgmental space to do the things that they do. These are very wiling participants."

A show which features a legion of serial killers is sure to inspire a barrage of questions about violence on television, and how that may or may not influence real world events.

"We all worry about it," Williamson said. "Who wasn’t affected by Aurora? We sit in a writer's room and are all traumatized. It reaches a moment where that just gets too real. But I'm writing fiction, I'm a storyteller. I know the real world affects me when I take pen to paper, but I don’t know how, it just happens."

As to the variety of "kills", given the numerous sociopaths on tap in the series, Williamson said, "Well that's a two fold answer: The options for [fictionalized] serial killers was traditionally, stab or stab, so there is a question of how you change it up. This is a madman challenging people to 'tell their own story.'" In other words, Carroll encourages his followers to kill in a manner that befits their own personality.

"I don’t sit around thinking of ways to kill people, though" he added. "I’m sitting around thinking of drama."

"The physical violence on the show is all surrounded by character interaction," Bacon said. "That’s the thing that I always go back to. The plot is interesting, but when I pick up the script I go 'what’s going to happen to this guy's life today and his relationship with Carroll and Claire?' You know Kevin Williamson is kind of a softie, he's interested in the love story of the show, and the personal struggles that my character has had before this relationship began...It has to do with the human aspect of the show."

One of the actor's playing a "follower" (who we will not reveal at this time) said, "It's interesting to me to watch the show with people. They'll say [my character] is a monster., but the core of everything [my character] does is this devotion and love for Joe Carroll. Everything else is a means to an end, and a way of getting closer to him. That's scarier to me, that it's about love."

"Ryan Hardy is surrounded by death and carries the weight of every victim," Williamson added. "He has a compulsion to save lives. That's what was interesting to me. On the one hand we have this heroic amazing do-gooder and I tired to pair him with the most evil, crazed, brilliant psychopath possible. And that to me is the nature of the show."

The Following will premiere Monday, January 21 at 9/8c on FOX.

Condition One, that cool new video startup that enables video creators to shoot immersive, 180-degree video mainstream, has announced a new player for ultra-HD playback and compatibility with RED and GoPro cameras. Together, that should enable a new way of shooting and distributing video on iPhones, the iPad, and the web.

The startup has technology that provides a unique, 180-degree field of vision. It basically mimics the human eye, and allows viewers to watch navigate around the fringes of the frame, just like usual peripheral vision. To do so, Condition One relies on a specialized lens which can be used with cameras that shoot ultra-HD 2.7K resolution like the RED — or the lens built in to new GoPro cameras, which captures 170 degrees.

Condition One has a specialized player, which essentially breaks the videos into four quadrants, each of which display 720p video, and then stitches them all back together. The new Condition One player, being announced and made available today at CES, will also now handle live video, in addition to that which is shot on-demand.

Condition One was founded by war videographer and documentary producer Danfung Dennis, whose film “Hell and Back Again” was nominated for a 2012 Academy Award. Together with Chief Product Officer Takaaki Okada, the two have brought the technology to market, enabling other filmmakers to display their content in the same way. Since being founded in 2010, Condition One has raised $2.35 million from Mark Cuban, Manilla CEO George Kliavkoff, and other angels.

Michael Bay Casts Irish Newcomer in Transformers 4

Director Michael Bay announced on his site that he's cast Irish unknown Jack Reynor in his forthcoming Transformers 4:

"I just hired a great new actor for Transformers 4 to star against Mark Wahlberg. Jack Reynor, he is an Irish kid that came to America with 30 bucks in his pocket. Pretty ballsy. Seriously who does that? Anyway I spotted him in a great little Irish movie WHAT RICHARD DID. This kid is the real deal.

Transformers 4, is not a reboot. That word has been floating around on the net.

This movie takes place exactly 4 years after the war in Chicago. The story makes a very natural transition, and reason as to why we have a whole new cast. This Transformers will feel very different then the last three. We are embarking on a new trilogy."

Microsoft: Timeline Trending Stories Upcoming Events Crunch With Us SIGN UP for CrunchDaily Crunchboard

Whether you’re a Microsoft user or not, you have to respect the fact that its install base for operating systems is massive. The company spans plenty of sectors, specifically enterprise, but of course in the home, too.

Today, the company announced that its latest operating system, Windows 8, has sold 60M licenses.

Here’s what the Windows blog team had to say about it:

At the 11th Annual J.P. Morgan Tech Forum at CES 2013 today, Windows Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Financial Officer Tami Reller announced that Windows 8 has sold 60 million licenses to date. This represents the cumulative sales of Windows 8 including both upgrades and sales to OEMs for new devices. This is a similar sales trajectory that we saw with Windows 7.

We have seen a significant increase in the number of Windows 8 certified systems since general availability at the end of October. There are now more than 1,700 certified systems for Windows 8 and Windows RT.

In addition the news of how many licenses have been sold, the team says that Microsoft is seeing “strong growth” in the developers building on top of the platform. The number of available apps has been quadrupled since launch. Also, Microsoft says that it has passed the 100M app download mark.

Windows 8 has only been available for two months, so Microsoft sees this as solid growth.

FOX Introducing Miniseries; Developing Projects from M. Night Shyamalan and Band of Brothers Writer

FOX announced their intention to move into miniseries at the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour today – though they used the eyebrow-raising terminology “long-form event series.”

The two projects they are in development on is Wayward Pines, from M. Night Shyamalan and FX Productions and Blood Brothers from Bruce C. McKenna (Band of Brothers, The Pacific), Gary Randall (The Glades, Saving Grace), Timothy Scott Bogart (Majors & Minors, Touched), Boardwalk Entertainment Group and Fox Television Studios.

The press release describes Wayward Pines, based on a novel, as “evocative of the classic cult hit Twin Peaks,” and it certainly sounds similar to that series. The description reads: “Secret Service agent Ethan Burke arrives in the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, ID, on a mission to find two missing federal agents. But instead of answers, Ethan’s investigation only turns up more questions. What’s wrong with Wayward Pines? Each step closer to the truth takes Ethan further from the life he knew, from the husband and father he was, until he must face the terrifying reality that he may never get out of Wayward Pines alive.” Wayward Pines is written by Chad Hodge (The Playboy Club) and executive-produced by Shyamalan, Hodge, Donald De Line (Green Lantern, The Italian Job) and Ashwin Rajan (After Earth).

Blood Brothers is the true story of the West Point Class of 1861. Says the press rerlease, “As our bitterly divided country tore itself apart over the issue of slavery, the West Point Brotherhood broke apart. Best friends, bonded in the intense crucible of the Academy, found themselves on opposite sides of a conflict that quickly became the bloodiest in U.S. history. For four violent years, these former comrades fought directly against each other, even as many of them rose from lowly second lieutenants to field generals. Throughout the conflict, however, they never lost their love and esteem for each other, which often resulted in many acts of kindness that stretched across enemy lines. Some died; others were broken by the conflict. But every one of the Brothers was utterly changed by a war that not only redefined America, but which still resonates today.” Blood Brothers is written by McKenna (who wrote for both Band of Brothers and The Pacific), and executive-produced by McKenna, Randall and Bogart.

FOX intends to order a pilot or pilots for one of these projects (or perhaps others to be named) later this year, with plans to debut their first “long-form event series” in 2014.

“With top-notch auspices and feature-quality production plans, Wayward Pines and Blood Brothers represent exactly the kind of high-impact, 10- to 12-part events we set out to develop when we entered the limited series business,” said Kevin Reilly, Chairman of Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. “These two series are the first of many big ideas, big names and big talent that you can anticipate will be on our air in the next 12-24 months.”

Alexis Ohanian, Co-founder of the “Internet’s front page,” Reddit.com, wants to spread his enthusiasm for the web to the entire U.S. Congress. Silicon Prairie is a policymaker-facing documentary, profiling salt-of-the-earth Internet entrepreneurs strewn across the nation’s heartland.

In response to the massive online protests against the Stop Online Piracy Act, much of the language out of the Internet community was reactionary and generically fearful. Ohanian’s delightfully inspiring 30-minute documentary presents a fresh look at why we should be cautious about regulating the Internet, wrapped in stories of neighborly faces that will likely appeal to audiences beyond the coastal tech bubbles.

“Every representative needs to know that they live in a digital district,” Ohanian tells me after the Consumer Electronics Show premier.

Following Ohanian and a motley crew of web successes on a pro-Internet bus tour, Silicon Prairie does an admirable job of profiling just how pervasive the effects of the web economy have been to pockets of recession-hit America.

Naithan Jones, founder of high-end meats seller, Aglocal, regales the crew about the high-stakes gamble he made to start his business. After breaking the news to his wife that he wanted dive into startup life, he came home one day with his house completely empty, “I sold everything on Craigslist so you can start paying for developers,” his wife told him.

Silicon Prairie plays on America’s love of meritocratic David vs. Goliath business struggles. “How does a guy in a basement compete with the likes of an EA,” says Ben Vu of Omaha, Nebraska-based gaming company Sky.vu, about video game giant, Electronic Arts. Vu, who plans to double his 29-strong workforce by the end of the year, has managed to score a movie deal for his breakout success, Battle Bears. No surprise, he credits the Internet for giving him expansive reach outside the typical tech hubs.

For as inspiring and admirably simple as Silicon Prairie is, its treatment of the Stop Online Piracy Act is dangerously shallow. In a mere 30 seconds, it rushed through the very complex bill and online response, which will likely leave thoughtful viewers understandably skeptical.

Still, the message is clear for policymakers: proceed with caution. “When you think about policy, it needs to be both protective of not ruining of what’s already happening,” Ohanian says, “and, at the same time, also more proactive in increasing things like access and making sure these resources are available to everyone.”

The video should be available for free sometime in the near future. For now, check out the trailer below:

Paramount Reveals Star Trek Into Darkness App

Paramount Pictures and Qualcomm Incorporated announced Monday a new Star Trek Into Darkness application that will utilize Gimbal context awareness technologies to deliver advanced real-world game experiences and exclusive content from the film.

From the app, users will be able to interact with their real-life surroundings to complete integrated missions and access exclusive movie materials such as videos, images and wallpapers; this is employed through the use of the app's audio scan functionality (during TV spots, etc.), geo-location recognition for scouting, and Trek-related image recognition.

"We are excited about collaborating with Paramount on this app as it further brings to life Qualcomm's vision of the digital sixth sense, where devices intelligently interact with the world around you," said Qualcomm Chairman and CEO Dr. Paul E. Jacobs. "By leveraging the Gimbal platform, this app harnesses the power of the smartphone to bridge the digital and physical world, allowing the studio to market the film in the real world and simultaneously bring users into the film's story and world."

As an added bonus, users who register for the app will be automatically entered into a sweepstakes for the chance to win a VIP trip to the U.S. premiere.

The Star Trek Into Darkness app will launch at the end of January.

The gTar, an electric guitar that makes it easy for anyone to play music with an embedded iPhone and LEDs, is now open for pre-orders. Incident, the company behind the gTar, has spent three years designing and prototyping the product. They launched on-stage at TechCrunch Disrupt in New York last year and had a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign that drew in more than 1,000 orders and $350,000.

They released this video today, giving a behind-the-scenes look at the manufacturing process, which happens in Shenzhen, naturally. It’s a mini-documentary that shows the end-to-end process for making the gTar, which retails for $399.

The gTar is a digital guitar that has interactive LEDs along the fretboard that can show you how to play songs. There’s a dock for an iPhone, where you can load in different songs or record your performances.

The whole Kickstarter process was a real learning experience for the company. They had only anticipated about a few hundred orders or so. Instead they got demand for about five tons worth of product. It wasn’t difficult to scale up the manufacturing process, given the experience of the factories the company had partnered with.

But managing expectations of backers has been a day-by-day learning process.

“We got a lot of really, really mainstream backers, not early adopters. And the response they had was that they expected it to be commercial grade — something that you could put on the shelf and buy it ready-to-go,” said co-founder Idan Beck. “But the thing is that Kickstarter projects are still pre-production.”

They had to refine the product in a couple of ways. They needed to make the strings more sensitive so that they could be used with standard guitar picks. They also had to make it easier to get firmware upgrades, with cartridges that you can pop in and out (so you don’t have to send the gTar back).

They’ve also increased developer access so that more apps can be built specifically for the gTar. It’s still early though with only about a dozen developer packs registered.

Incident is opening the online store today, and the company hopes to scale up in a sustainable way. “The key is to grow at a pace that you can control,” Beck said.

Here’s the original video that shows how the gTar works:
